Reader’s Card
Application Eligibility: Children aged between 13 and 16
Application Procedures: Children shall be accompanied by adults and bring their own and adults' valid IDs (ID card, residence booklet, passport, officer card, residence permit for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, Mainland travel permit for Hong Kong and Macao residents, Mainland travel permit for Taiwan residents, Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card) and photocopies of the valid IDs to apply for NLC Reader's Card by completing the NLC Reader's Card Application Form (for 13-15 years old) at the registration office, which is free of charge for the first time. Readers must apply for the NLC Reader's Card in person, and agents are not allowed.
Functions: Open stacks reading services in general reading rooms; Chinese citizens can open loan function of Chinese books
Application Eligibility: Chinese citizens and foreigners aged 16 and above
Application Procedures: Readers shall bring their valid IDs (ID card, residence booklet, passport, officer card, residence permit for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents, Mainland travel permit for Hong Kong and Macao residents, Mainland travel permit for Taiwan residents, Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card) to apply for NLC Reader's Card by completing the NLC Reader's Card Application Form at the registration office, which is free of charge for the first time. Second Generation ID Card
Application Eligibility: Chinese citizens aged 16 and above
Application Procedures: Direct entry to the open stacks reading rooms with the person's second generation ID card.
Functions: Open stacks reading services in general reading rooms
Internet Registration: Real-name user
Application Eligibility: Chinese citizens who hold valid IDs
Application Procedures: Readers can register as real-name users through the NLC website or various online service platforms provided by Mobile Internet (See Internet registration methods). When registering, readers should fill in his/her basic information, name, gender, ethnicity, ID card number, etc. After being verified by the system, readers become real-name users.
Functions: Remote services of part of digital resources  (See usage help for details )
Internet Registration: Non real-name user
Application Eligibility: Null
Application Procedures: Readers can register as non real-name users through the NLC website or various online service platforms provided by Mobile Internet (See Internet registration methods). When registering, readers should fill in his/her basic information, and then become non real-name users after being validated through E-mail or mobile phone verification code.
Functions: Remote services of part of digital resources (See usage help for details)

User's Instructions to Reader's Card/ Second Generation ID Card/ Reader's Card of Children's Library
1. The Reader's Card is required to be verified at the card verification counter at the entrance of reading rooms before entering.
2. Holder of the Reader's Card should obey the Rules and Regulations of the National Library of China. For severe violations of library regulations, the person's card will be suspended until relevant measures and corrections take place.

Annual Registration of Reader's Card
The Reader's Card is to be registered by the Library. After the card being held for three years, it should be registered at the card registration office. If a Reader's Card fails to be registered as scheduled, it will be suspended. If a reader needs to reuse his/her Reader Card, he/she must hold ID card and Reader Card to process and verify registration procedures at card registration office. Doing it by other people is not allowed.

Extended Functions of Reader's Card
The Reader’s Card can also be used for financial and book loan purposes. For the financial purpose, money can be deposited in the card for paid services in the Library (photocopy and printing). The general Reader's Card can be used this way. For readers under 16 years old, their payment activities shall be performed by accompanying adults in the Comprehensive Reference Desk. Chinese citizens aged 16 and above can use the card to borrow books, and Chinese citizens aged between 13 and 16 can borrow Chinese books. The deposit for borrowing Chinese books is RMB 100 yuan, for borrowing foreign books is 1,000 yuan.

Deposit Refunds of Reader's Card
If a reader wishes to get back the deposit, he/she must return all books on loan and clear any fee owing to the Library if any. Deposit will be refunded upon the reader presenting his/her Reader's Card, second generation ID card and the deposit receipt. If someone processes the cancellation on behalf of the card holder, he/she must also present his/her own valid ID card. (Please refer to the website for opening hours of reading rooms/service desks /web/dzzn/dsb_kgsj/index.shtml


Readers must safely store all deposit receipts for functions of his/her Reader's Card. The Library will not re-issue any receipt that is lost. The reader is required to present deposit receipt for taking back his/her deposit when processing a cancellation of functions.

Once a reader loses his/her deposit receipt, he/she must report the loss to the Library. After completing cancellation procedures, he/she can take back his/her deposit with a valid ID card. If reader entrusts other agent to handle deposit refunds without deposit receipt, the agent's valid ID card and a copy of the valid ID card should be submitted meanwhile.

Special Tip: Please keep the deposit receipt properly. You could take back the deposit before 16:30 on workdays. For more details, please contact the Card Registration Office of the NLC (Tel: 010-88545426).

Advance Payment Refunds of Reader's Card (for juveniles aged from 13 to 16)
For advance payment refunds of Reader's Card, junior readers shall be accompanied by an adult, and present their and the adult’s valid ID cards and photocopies.

Reporting a lost Reader's Card and Re-registration of a new card
A reader should report his/her lost Reader's Card at the Card Registration Office. If the lost card is found, he/she can request to remove the lost card report with his/her valid ID card at the Card Registration Office. If a reader cannot find the lost card, he/she should apply for a new card with his/her valid ID card and a processing fee (RMB 5 yuan/card). The lost card will be cancelled at the same time and the reader's deposit remains valid

Internet Registration Methods
Readers can register as the users through the NLC website or various online service platforms, including Reader Portal(read.nlc.cn), Wenjin Search(find.nlc.cn), Intelligent QA(https://ianswer.yilinkin.com/), NLC Mobile Phone, NLC APP, and so on.

Other Reminders
1. One person can only apply for one Reader's Card.

2. A Reader's Card can only be used by its owner. Please do not lend it to others.
3. The Reader’s Card is only provided to individual applicants. Remote/collective application or agents are not allowed.
4. The extended functions of the Reader’s Card for financial and book loan purposes involve money transaction; juvenile readers shall perform these functions under the guidance of their accompanying adult.
