Representatives from European and American libraries visit the NLC for an exchange forum

On June 16, representatives from 20 institutions, including the Library of Congress, visited the National Library of China (NLC) for an exchange forum. Chen Ying, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the NLC and Deputy Director of the NLC, attended the event, along with directors from 12 departments or divisions of the NLC.

Chen Ying briefed the guests on the general situation of the NLC, as well as its exchanges with libraries in Europe and America. She said that through platforms such as the Sino-US Library Cooperation Conference, the NLC had carried out many fruitful projects with East Asian libraries in North America, and had achieve fruitful results in personnel exchanges, academic exchanges, overseas literature collation and digitization cooperation, and so on. She hoped that on the existing progress, the NLC would further leverage the mechanism of the cooperation conference, deepening cooperation with various libraries in areas such as the collation, digitization, and publication of Chinese ancient books and documents from the Republic of China period, resource sharing in Sinology research, procurement of Chinese and foreign language publications, and so on. She also hoped to take the annual Beijing International Book Fair as an opportunity to normalize the discussions and exchanges, and further promote pragmatic cooperation between Chinese and American, as well as Chinese and European libraries.

 

Representatives from European and American libraries concurred with the cooperation direction proposed by Chen Ying, acknowledged the NLC's measures such as the free access to digital resources, active provision of document delivery services, and so on, and shared their respective experiences and proposals for exchanges and collaboration. All parties expressed the hope that they could leverage their respective library collections to explore new directions for exchange and cooperation, make flexible use of book exchange and donation channels to address the shortage of materials on contemporary China in each library, strengthen exchanges and cooperation among professional staff through librarian training programs, academic seminars and other events, and further improve inter-library exchange mechanisms for bibliographic records and electronic journals.

 

Directors from the NLC International Cooperation Division, Foreign Language Publications Acquisitions & Cataloguing Department, Legislative Reference Service Department, Ancient Books Library, Office of China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books, National Library of China Publishing House, and Beijing NLC Bookstore Co., Ltd. responded to the presentations delivered by representatives from Europe and America in various aspects such as Sino-US library cooperation conference, book donation projects, ancient book cataloging and restoration, collation of documents on sinology, cooperative publishing, as well as Chinese book procurement and distribution. They expressed that they would maintain communications after the forum to actively facilitate the implementation of relevant cooperation initiatives.

 

After the symposium, the delegation also visited the exhibitions at the National Museum of Classic Books.
