The day of April 7, 2023 marked the 115th birthday of Mr. Fu Lei, and the series of activities in memory of him, titled "Classic Works of a Man with Pure Heart", were held at the National Library of China (NLC). The bronze statue of Fu Lei, donated by the Party Committee and government of Zhoupu County of Shanghai, was laid on the east lawn of the NLC South Area. Xiong Yuanming, Director of the NLC, Lin Jun, Deputy Director of Shanghai Library, Min Qingfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhoupu County in Shanghai, Chen Zheming, representative of Fu Lei's family, and relevant library leaders and guests attended the ceremony.
Xiong Yuanming said in his speech that Mr. Fu Lei had a deep connection with the NLC. As early as the 1950s and 1960s, he entrusted Mr. Ba Jin to donate his translated works of Jean-Christophe and Le Cousin Pons to the NLC, as well as the music scores of his close friend Tan Xiaolin. In 2008, Fu Lei's relatives donated all existing manuscripts of translated works by him to the NLC, including Jean-Christophe, La Cousine Bette, Illusions Perdues and Philosophie de l'Art. The NLC has also held major exhibitions such as "The Pure Monument—Commemoration of Fu Lei's Centenary", "Exhibition of Mr. Fu Lei's Manuscripts of Translated Works Donated to the National Library of China", and "The World of Innocence—Exhibition in Honor of the Semi-centennial of the Passing away of Mr. and Mrs. Fu Lei", so that their manuscripts can benefit scholars and future generations, and be more widely known to the public.
Min Qingfeng said in his speech that in recent years, Zhoupu County has always regarded the "Fu Lei Spirit" as the humanistic core of economic and social development, started the Fu Lei Culture Special Fund, and funded the publication of the Complete Collection of the Works and Translation of Fu Lei; established a Fu Lei campus network that covers the entire stage of compulsory education for middle school, primary school, and younger students; repaired Fu Lei's old residence and built the first library named after Fu Lei in China; and carried out activities such as soliciting the most touching family letters nationwide with the example of Fu Lei's Family Letters. Throughout history, the people of Zhoupu have been proud of their culture, carefully nurturing, inheriting, and promoting their historic culture, among which the spirit of Fu Lei is the most remarkable and profound achievement.
At the ceremony, Xiong Yuanming, Min Qingfeng, Lin Jun, Min Min, Qi Weiping, Cai Zanshi, Chen Zheming, and other guests jointly unveiled the bronze statue of Fu Lei standing on the east lawn of the National Museum of Classic Books.
Xiong Yuanming issued a donation certificate to Min Min. The guests on site presented flowers to Mr. Fu Lei's bronze statue, expressing their sincerest greetings and respect for him.
At the branch venue of Fu Lei Library in Shanghai, Zhao Huimao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Mayor of Zhoupu County in Pudong New Area, as well as teachers and students from Fu Lei School, watched the live broadcast of the completion ceremony of Fu Lei's Bronze Statue.
The ceremony was presided over by Zhang Zhiqing, Executive Deputy Director of the NLC, and attended by scholars from Beijing and Shanghai, as well as heads of relevant departments and divisions of the NLC.
The NLC also exhibited 15 pieces of Fu Lei's manuscripts collected by the NLC, showcasing his love and tireless pursuit of translation, as well as his childlike pure heart and humanistic sentiments. At the same time, such activities as the "Fu Lei Cup" National Children's Painting Exhibition, Fu Lei Memorial Symposium, China-France cultural exchange and Youth Translation Forum were held at the NLC on the same day.
