On February 15, the opening ceremony of "Four Discoveries of Ancient Chinese Documents at the Beginning of the 20th Century" was held in the National Museum of Classic Books (NMCB). Rao Quan, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Wei Hongtao, Deputy Director of the National Archives Administration of China, Xiong Yuanming, Director of the NLC and Director of the NMCB, He Xiaolei, Deputy Director of the Department of Museums and Social Heritage, National Cultural Heritage Administration, Han Yongfu, Deputy Director of the First Historical Archives of China, Zhang Yuanlin, Deputy Director of the Dunhuang Academy, Zhu Jianjun, Director of the Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum, and so on, attended the opening ceremony. Rao Quan delivered a speech and announced the opening of the exhibition. Xiong Yuanming, Zhu Jianjun, Zhang Yuanlin, He Xiaolei and Wei Hongtao delivered speeches successively. The opening ceremony was hosted by Zhang Zhiqing, Executive Deputy Director of the NLC.
In his speech, Rao Quan pointed out that since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee had attached great importance to the inheritance and promotion of the excellent traditional Chinese culture, and attached great importance to the important role of cultural relics and ancient books in the inheritance of Chinese culture and the promotion of cultural exchanges. This exhibition gathered the relevant cultural relics and documents of the "Four Discoveries" in various places. It had been the largest and highest-grade exhibition of ancient documents so far, which displayed the achievements on the protection of cultural relics and ancient books in these years. It was a feast for libraries, museums, archives and research institutes in the new era to share the characteristic collection resources and to carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture. It was also a concrete measure for us to jointly implement the spirit of the important discussion on the protection of cultural heritage and ancient books.
The oracle bone inscriptions of the Yin and Shang Dynasties, Juyan Han slips, Dunhuang manuscripts, and cabinet archives of the Ming and Qing Dynasties were the "Four Discoveries of Ancient Chinese Documents" at the Beginning of the 20th Century. For the first time, this exhibition gathered valuable cultural relics collected in various places, which were divided into four themes, i.e. "Oracle Bone Inscriptions of the Yin and Shang Dynasties", "Juyan Han Slips", "Dunhuang Manuscripts", and "Archives of the Ming and Qing Dynasties". They were displayed in the NO.5, NO.6, NO.7 and NO.8 Exhibition Hall of the NMCB respectively, with an exhibition area of nearly 3000 square meters. Oracle bones and Dunhuang manuscripts collected by the NLC, Juyan Han slips collected by the Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum, and archives of the Ming and Qing Dynasties collected by the First Historical Archives of China, totaling 382 pieces of 249 titles, were displayed in this exhibition, which had been the largest exhibition of cultural relics and documents related to the theme of "Four Discoveries" so far. Visitors could get a one-stop understanding of various carriers and rich forms of binding in the development of Chinese classics, and experience the long and profound Chinese excellent traditional culture through the ancient documents in the NMCB.
This exhibition was not only a complete linkage among libraries, museums, archives and research institutes to break the barriers of inter-library and industrial resources, break through regional restrictions, integrate high-quality cultural resources, jointly promote the excellent traditional Chinese culture, trace back to Chinese history, and explore the Chinese culture, but also a new attempt to give play to their respective advantages and work together to improve the level of public cultural services.
The exhibition was guided by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, and co-sponsored by the First Historical Archives of China, the Dunhuang Academy, the Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum, and the NLC (NMCB). Leaders of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the National Archives Administration of China, the National Cultural Heritage Administration, and relevant departments and bureaus, experts, scholars, enterprises and media representatives attended the opening ceremony.
