As one of the founding member states and permanent member states of the United Nations, China is the pioneer of UN document depository system. In 1947, at the beginning of the depository system, the National Library of China and the Chong Qing Library has been received into it. After then, the UN depository system has grown stronger and stronger in China. Especially in the 21st century, a group of libraries has been designated to be UN depository libraries. Until now, there are 20 depository libraries in China, scattering in 12 cities.

　　Besides, the special agencies and related agencies of UN have carried out their own depository programme one after the other, in order to enhance dissemination of information and preservation of literature around the world. In addition to the National Library of China, all kinds of libraries from different provinces, cities and districts applied to be designated depository libraries of those international organizations. They strengthened the depository libraries community in China and at the same time provide a more convenient information platform for free access of public on national level.
