Exchange of publications is an important part of the literature acquisition work, an important window for exterior cultural exchanges, and an effective way to add collection. It plays an important role in literature resource construction. Publication exchange of National Library of China in the principle of "exchange what I have for what I need based on equality and mutual benefit", has established good information exchange relationships with a wide range of national libraries, university libraries, public libraries and other information units around the world for the exchange of books, periodicals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, films, network publications and other forms of literature that National Library of China is in need of. At present, National Library of China has established publication exchange relationships with more than 500 national libraries, public libraries, university libraries, professional libraries and research institutions in 117 countries and regions around the world.
National Library of China is willing to work with more libraries and research institutes at home and abroad to establish the publication exchange relationship, and expand the scope of exchange and share publication fruits together. National Library focuses on the collection in the following scope:
1.works of well-known leaders of the international communist movement (including the Complete Works and Selected Works in majority languages), as well as the text books of Chinese Communist Party and state leaders;
2. theories, ideas and works of well-known leaders of the international communist movement, Chinese Communist Party and the state;
3. works of national liberation movements, labor movement, socialism and the international communist movement;
4. works of the heads from different states, governments, main political parties, important social groups and influential figures from all walks of life;
5. books and other information studying China and Chinese;
6. literature with important reference value written, edited, or translated by overseas Chinese;
7. international laws, international treaties and constitutions, important laws, decrees of different countries;
8. large-scale comprehensive encyclopedia, large and medium-sized dictionaries, international and national biographical and geographical dictionaries, and yearbooks of the world and national level.
9. works of the winners of prestigious international awards (such as the Nobel Prize) and important national awards (such as the Goncourt Prize) and works of scholars from the National Academy of Sciences;
10. Chinese literature published in foreign countries, and important Chinese ancient and contemporary literature translated into foreign languages;
11. the world's national government publications, including laws and regulations, government gazettes, and other statutory or regulatory, legislative or judicial publications, administrative reports, and publications which contain statistical, demographic, socio-economic and scientific data.
12. international and national academic organizations’ publications, conference proceedings, and high-level academic publications edited and published by important institutes and associations;
13. reference books, academic works and publications of various subjects;
14. literature of library science and information management with great reference value; publications of the world's national libraries and international library organizations.
15. China's neighboring countries’ political, economic, cultural, ethnic, religious, military, geographical and other literature.
Carrier form of the exchanged documents is mainly print-based, also including the microfilms, audio-visual documents, electronic publications, and network forms of literature, and other carrier forms, in such languages as Chinese, English, French, German, Russian, Japanese, and Korean etc.
