The WHO SEA Region2 are home to more than one-third (52.6 million of 144.0 million) of stunted children and more than half of wasted children under 5 years of age (24.9 million out of 47.0 million) worldwide (1). Almost a quarter of infants are born with a low birth weight (24.2%) and micronutrient deficiencies are common (2, 3).3 The Region is now faced with a further complication in the form of rising levels of childhood overweight and obesity, with 5 million children (under 5 years of age) suffering from these conditions (1). This double burden of malnutrition is characterized by the coexistence of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight, obesity or diet-related NCDs within individuals, households and populations, and across the life-course.
