In the quest for gender equality, breaking free from outdated patriarchal notions is an imperative. Held hostage by stereotypes of masculinity, a staggering 3 out of 5 men worldwide are forced to play the role of “breadwinners”. Flawed notions of manhood often promote aggressiveness, emotional stoicism, entitlement to women’s bodies, and homophobia as ways for men to manage social, economic, and psychological insecurities. Galvanized by the enlightening discussions of UNESCO’s Maputo Dialogue, this report calls for meaningful engagement of men and boys for gender equality in the Global South. Learning from a diversity of experiences from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, it highlights the transformative potential of promoting positive masculinities as an effective tool towards building equitable societies.Unveiling promising practices and interventions, the report emphasizes on context and local understandings of gender. Policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and advocates are invited to wield the tools and knowledge within this report to pave the way for a future free of patriarchal structures where people of all genders can live up to their unique potential in peace and solidarity.
