The global video game industry reaches over 3.30 billion gamers daily. Women make up nearly half of them, but only 23% of the industry workforce. Facing gender-based discrimination, stereotypes, and misogynistic hate speech, women, girls, and LGBTQIA+ individuals have been marginalised in the gaming world for decades. Now, following the Black Lives Matter and MeToo movements for racial and gender justice, diversity and inclusion initiatives have emerged in the video game industry. This is a vital step in recognising games as cultural, artistic, and educational tools which can foster empathy and well-being. Online platforms can also play a significant role in connecting gamers worldwide, encouraging intercultural dialogue and bridging divides between the Global North and South. To leverage the potential of gaming for good, we must tackle the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence, synthetic content, augmented and virtual realities and strive to improve our worlds – real and virtual alike.  It is why UNESCO joined forces with the 8one Foundation. Through an exploration of the landscape of gender issues and initiatives in gaming, this Transforming MEN’talities report offers actionable recommendations for stakeholders – policymakers, esports federations, studios, developers, streamers, gamers and the public – to learn from good practices and move forward. Gender inequalities in gaming are not game-breaking glitches.
