Women and girls are agents of change, contributing as students, scientists, conservationists, advocates, and leaders to protect the ocean. Indigenous women and women in SIDS possess valuable knowledge for sustainable ocean management. However, women working in ocean-related fields often face discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence online and offline, limiting their full potential. We are in Unchartered Waters. To address these challenges and empower Women and girls, policies must promote women's participation in ocean governance and provide safe working conditions onshore and offshore. This includes collecting sex-disaggregated data and increasing access to ocean-related education and careers. This policy brief aims to inform the G20 Women’s Empowerment Working Group and the G20 Summit on the intersection of gender equality and ocean-related issues, offering recommendations based on UN reports and scientific research for effective and sustainable solutions.
