Zhang Zhiqing, NLC Deputy Director, heads a delegation for the 85th IFLA General Conference and Assembly

From 24 August to 30 August, on the invitation of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), a 5-person delegation of the National Library of China (NLC), led by Zhang Zhiqing, Deputy Director of the NLC, attended the 85th IFLA General Conference and Assembly in Athens, Greece.

The theme was "Libraries: Dialogue for Change". More than 3000 attendees from different countries attended 278 sessions in the conference. During the conference, more than 200 papers were collected, more than 500 people gave speeches, 132 exhibitors participated in the exhibition, and 23 satellite conferences were held. Before the conference, Chinese Speaking Participants Caucus Meeting was held for Chinese people from all over the world. More than 110 people attended the meeting, including Chinese representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, public and university libraries, university libraries of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), and representatives from Canada and Singapore. Representatives shared their views on the development status of their respective libraries, international exchanges and the participation status of the IFLA, and so on.

During the conference, Zhang Zhiqing, NLC Deputy Director, attended the opening ceremony, the Conference for Directors of National Libraries, Governing Board Council Meeting and closing ceremony. He exchanged with representatives on the development status of the NLC and the participation status of the IFLA. As Director of IFLA-PAC China Center, Zhang Zhiqing attended the working conference of IFLA-PAC, and made a report on the work of China Center. In addition, the delegation members also participated in 11 meetings, including the first meeting of Professional Cataloging Committee, working conference of Document Delivery and Resources Sharing Section, working conference of Asia and Oceania Section, and so on.

During the conference, the NLC also held several bilateral talks and multilateral talks, such as discussing the preparations for the Third Forum on Silk Road International Library Alliance and 2019 Training Class for Southeast Asian Librarians with Tay Ai Cheng, vice chief executive officer of the National Library Board, Singapore, discussing related details of the 7th China-North America Library Conference with Winston, principal of Johns Hopkins University Library, and Zhang Shali, Director of Auburn University Library, talking with Macnaught, Director of the National Library of New Zealand, who would attend "International Symposium on Libraries: Keeping Pace with the Times" held by the NLC, and discussing the progress of BRICS Alliance of Libraries Project with representatives of Russian State Library for Foreign Literature.

In addition, the delegation also visited the National Library of Greece and attended cultural evening activity organized by the Organizing Committee. As the Chinese simultaneous interpretation volunteers, Wang Fei and other four librarians of the NLC participated in the Chinese interpretation work of the conference and successfully completed the interpretation work, which was highly recognized by the library community.
