The Arab-China Digital Library Project launches officially

On 10 July, the 8th Ministerial Conference of China-Arab States Cooperation Forum was held in Beijing. As one of the mechanism-based practices of the Forum, the Arab-China Digital Library Project was officially launched during the Conference, which is also the outcome of Sino-Arab library and information cooperation mechanism. Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, along with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS) and Adel al-Jubeir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were present at the launching ceremony, and they pressed the touchscreen together to announce that the portal website of the Arab-China Digital Library ( was online. Du Jiang, CPC Party Member of Ministry of Culture & Tourism of the PRC, Wei Dawei, Deputy Director of the National Library of China (NLC), Hala Gad, Director of Information & Documentation Dept. of the LAS Secretariat, Abdulkareem al-Zaid, Deputy Supervisor General of the King Abdulaziz Public Library (KAPL) of Saudi Arabia also attended the ceremony.

In order to promote Sino-Arab civilization blending and mutual appreciation, to boost traditional Sino-Arab friendship and cultural exchange, China had actively cooperated with Arab States in library and information fields. With the joint efforts of all parties, China and Arab States’ Libraries “Beijing Collaborative Initiatives” in 2014 and The Memorandum of Understanding between the National Library of China and the Secretariat of the League of Arab States were signed successively; representatives from Chinese and Arab libraries had comprehensive and in-depth discussion on establishing cooperative mechanism in the field of information, sharing and development of collaboration for library resources, preservation and access to documents and classic books, progress and cooperation of digital library, and reached consensus on constructing portal website of Arab-China Digital Library.

The Arab-China Digital Library Project had begun its preparatory work since 2015, it was implemented by a joint committee formed by the NLC, the LAS Secretariat and the KAPL. The joint committee had active consultations and repetitive argumentations on the website logo, website domain name, copyright, contents and technical architecture, achieved the goal of constructing the portal website of the Arab-China Digital Library eventually. With functions of contents retrieving and online browsing, the portal website is available in Chinese-Arabic bilingual version, it contains e-books, manuscripts, pictures, audios and videos which represent the evolutionary process of Chinese and Arab civilizations. After launching officially, the portal website will continually update contents and resources as well as improve its functionality.
