Sun Yigang, Deputy Director of the NLC, heads a delegation for the 84th IFLA General Conference and Assembly


From 23 August to 30 August, by the invitation of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), a 5-person delegation of the National Library of China (NLC), led by Sun Yigang, deputy director of the NLC, attended the 84th IFLA General Conference and Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and satellite meeting.

The theme of this year’s Conference was “Transform Libraries, Transform Societies”. More than 3000 attendees from different countries attended 249 sessions during the Conference. Before the Assembly, the NLC held Chinese Speaking Participants Caucus for all Chinese attendees from all over the world, which gave detailed introduction of IFLA's latest development and the different section sessions of the 84th IFLA General Conference and Assembly.

During the conference, Sun Yigang and the NLC delegation attended meeting of IFLA Asia and Oceania Section Standing Committee, delivered a speech to introduce the development and planning of “Silk Road International Library Alliance” and briefed on international exchange and cooperation of the NLC. In addition, the NLC delegation also attended Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL), Strategic Program on Preservation & Conservation (PAC), Conference Program on Document Delivery & Resource Sharing and ASEAN Caucus, discussed hot issues for library community with top leaders of libraries worldwide.

The NLC held several bilateral and multilateral talks as well, which include discussing issues like exchanging visits and signing new cooperation agreement with Peter Murray, Acting Minister of Internal Affairs of New Zealand and Bill Macnaught, Director of the National Library of New Zealand; holding talks with Guy Berthiaume, Director of National Library and Archives of Canada, on programs of exchange and cooperation in future; negotiating on carrying forward the conference with Winston Tabb, President of the 6th China-North America Library Conference; meeting with Tay Ai Cheng, vice Chief Executive Officer of the National Library Board Singapore, talking about preparing the Assembly of the Silk Road International Library Alliance.
