The opening ceremony & first lecture of Series Lectures on Important Scientific and Technological Inventions in Ancient China is held in the NLC


On the afternoon of April 13, the opening ceremony & first lecture of Series Lectures on Important Scientific and Technological Inventions in Ancient China was held in Wenhuitang of the National Library of China (NLC), which was co-sponsored by the NLC (China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books) and the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHNS). About 130 people attended the activity, including Han Yongjin, director of the NLC, secretary of the CPC Committee of the NLC, and director of China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books, Zhang Baichun, director of the IHNS, principals of the NLC related departments, and readers. The activity was hosted by Zhang Zhiqing, deputy director of the NLC and deputy director of China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books.

 
In his speech, Han Yongjin said, the publicity and introduction of science development history and the vast scientific and technological inventions in popular manners was the important social responsibility and historical mission of today's scientific and technological workers and cultural workers, was the effective working point to fulfill the General Secretary Xi's series speech spirits of carrying forward Chinese excellent traditional culture, reveal national wisdom and build cultural confidence, and realize the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese excellent traditional culture, and was the important part of ancient books preservation and conservation promotion activities during the 13th Five-year Plan period.

After the opening ceremony, Zhang Baichun made the first lecture named "The Thoughts on Important Scientific and Technological Inventions in Ancient China", which summarized the major problems and main clues in the history of Chinese ancient science and technology and made the audience understand the achievements and characteristics of Chinese ancient science and technology development.

There are 12 lectures in all, and each lecture is held at 14:30 on Friday afternoon in the NLC from 13 April. The lecture content covers ancient mathematics, medicine, agronomy, astronomy, calendar, metallurgy, jade cutting, textile, architecture, military technology and so on, involves the most important and the most cutting-edge research achievements of relevant subjects, balances scientific discovery and technological inventions, document records and practical application, technology evolution and social impact, era value and comparison between China and western countries. Readers can have a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth understanding of the important issues in the history of Chinese science and technology through this series of activities.
