The 25th Conference of Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania is held in the NLC


From 17 May to 18 May, the 25th Conference of Directors of National Libraries in Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) was held in the National Library of China (NLC). Yu Qun, minister assistant of the Ministry of Culture, Donna Scheeder, IFLA president, Han Yongjin, NLC director, Wei Dawei, NLC deputy director, Sun Yigang, NLC deputy director, Zheng Hao, deputy director of Bureau for External Cultural Relations, the Ministry of Culture, and so on, attended the conference. More than 30 attendees from 20 national libraries or institutions assuming the functions of national libraries attended the conference.


In the opening ceremony, Yu Qun said, nowadays the development of librarianship had entered the period of digital construction, and would move towards a new stage of information sharing. In the trend of the times, China was willing to work with colleagues of national libraries in Asia and Oceania to enhance pragmatic cooperation and work together to face opportunities and challenges, and to make a greater contribution to promoting our long and splendid history and culture.

In the opening ceremony, Han Yongjin said the NLC had achieved many benefits from the CDNLAO, which included widening the work vision, learning the advanced experiences, promoting the development of our businesses, and particularly establishing good friendship with the libraries in this region and carrying out a number of bilateral and multilateral cooperation projects.

The theme of the conference was "Building Sustainable Regional Network of National Libraries". The attendees introduced the latest development achievements and shared the practices and experiences in carrying out international cooperation of their libraries. The NLC gave a special report named "Promote regional exchanges and cooperation—A case study of the National Library of China", which presented the NLC's positive roles in international library community and received the affirmation of the attendees. In the conference, the attendees studied the suggestions on optimizing conference organization and management mechanism proposed by Chinese side, which played important roles for promoting the sustainable development of the CDNLAO.

On the morning of 18 May, the attendees attended the opening ceremony of "Great Love without Borders—the Document Exhibition in Commemorating the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Rewi Alley", which was co-sponsored by the NLC and the National Library of New Zealand, and visited the exhibition.

The CDNLAO is a regional international conference which aims to enhance the relations and cooperation among national libraries in this region. The NLC held the 4th and 12th CDNLAO in 1989 and 2004 respectively. Over the years, under the joint efforts of all member institutions, the CDNLAO has made great achievements in promoting information exchange, experience learning, resource sharing, exhibition cooperation, and so on, which promoted the librarianship development of national libraries in this region.
