The NLC unites four large-scale public libraries to issue ancient books digital resources online


On 28 February, the National Library of China (China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books) united Shanghai Library, Tianjin Library, Zhejiang Library and Yunnan Library to issue ancient books digital resources online, providing services for public reading and academic research for free. Zhang Zhiqing, deputy director of the National Library of China (NLC) and deputy director of China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books, related principals of the Ministry of Culture, the NLC, and united issuing institutions, Fu Xinian, chairman of National Commission for Cultural Relics Identification, Wu Jianzhong, former director of Shanghai Library, and other experts, attended the launching activity, which was an important phased result of carrying out Public Cultural Service Guarantee Law of the People's Republic of China and The Opinions on Carrying Out the Projects of Inheriting and Developing Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture.


In the conference, Zhang Zhiqing introduced the issue situation of National Ancient Books Survey and Registration Database, and Chinese Ancient Books Resources Database. He said, the online publication of ancient books digital resources was library's work orientation of adhering to people-oriented principle, the specific requirement of serving people's demands, opening and sharing, and the concrete embodiment of public cultural service demands "public welfare, fundamentality, equality, convenience". Ancient books resources were open to the society via Internet freely. The public could appreciate and read cultural heritage in doors. It couldn't only improve public cultural service level, but also enhance sense of cultural participation, sense of acquisition and sense of identity of the public. The representatives of united issuing institutions introduced their issued resources respectively.

The ancient books digital resources issued by the National Library of China (China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books) and four public libraries amounted to more than 10,000 volumes, and all of them were the featured resources of each library. With the formerly issued resources, the total amount had reached to 24,000 volumes, which was equal to the total amount of 6 volumes of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature. The species and editions of ancient books were more valuable, and the literature value was much higher. Meanwhile, national ancient books survey had made important progress. More than 2 million items of data had been finished, and 1,218 ancient books collection institutions had finished ancient books survey and registration. Based on 3.587 million items of ancient books survey data collected by 96 institutions/individuals from 13 provinces and organs directly under the central government, National Ancient Books Survey and Registration Database increased 42,000 items of ancient books survey data of 24 institutions from Xinjiang, Gansu and Shanxi, totaling 430,000 items of ancient books survey data from 120 institutions/individuals. The bibliography data of National Ancient Books Survey and Registration Database achieved the requirements of formal publication. National Ancient Books Survey and Registration Database became an online ancient books basic database for the public, and would be updated successively.

On 28 September 2016, as the phased results of Chinese Ancient Books Preservation Plan, National Ancient Books Survey and Registration Database and Chinese Ancient Books Resources Database were launched officially, which marked that ancient books images and data resources in public library system entered into Internet service era, and received broad attention and good response of the society. The demonstrative roles of the National Library of China (China National Center for Preservation & Conservation of Ancient Books) on the opening and sharing of ancient books resources received positive responses of provincial public libraries. Each library promoted the opening and sharing of its ancient books resources, and formed a new situation of national joint action.
